Hiunchuli Peak Climbing (6,441m) - Spring 2012
Hiunchuli Peak (6,441m) together with Annapurna South form a massive south-facing wall. Hiunchuli has large South Shoulder extending along the Modi Khola River Valley and 3 ridges radiating from the summit towards West, Northeast and South. From the technical climbing aspect it is considered as one of the easiest peaks for an expedition climb, however it has a considerable objective dander of falling rocks and maybe difficult for route finding on its Southeast Face climb, the standard route. Its Northeast Ridge forms a shoulder guarding the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary with the Base Camp of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) located at its base. Hiunchuli was first climbed via its southeast face in October 1971 by expedition from American Peace Corps lead by Craig Anderson.
Hiunchuli offers major new route potentials; however it has received little attention from mountaineers and is rarely climbed. It was first reported by Jimmy Roberts, who also named Annapurna Sanctuary, because local inhabitants considered the area sacred. There are 3 major trekking peaks accessible from Annapurna Sanctuary: Tent Peak, Fluted Peak and Hiunchuli.
Our Hiunchuli Climbing Services
In the Base Camp: Snowy Horizon Treks & Expedition provides very professional, helpful and friendly service from Kathmandu to the ABC as well as during the climb. Our objective is to provide a good quality, helpful, safe, friendly, stress free and comprehensive service to maximize summit opportunity.
In the Base camp our cooks and helpers will prepare and serve three delicious freshly cooked and plentiful meals a day and will ensure that hot and cold drinks are available 24hrs a day. In the Base Camp we provide spacious expedition quality personal tents for all our clients both with full board or base-camp service only. In the base camp we also provide dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet facilities and portable shower facilities and tent accommodation for our staff.
In the Base Camp we provide access to communication including satellite telephone and internet access, solar panels to charge your batteries and UHF/VHF hand held radios on the mountain to maintain communications between ABC and high camps.
Our Leader and camp manager as well as climbing Sherpas have an extensive experience of multiple Everest climbs. They will ensure cooperation with other companies and Base Camp organization. The Base Camp is a cooperative to ensure contribution from all operators to the task of route fixing and to ensure the safety of climbers from ABC to the summit.
Full Board: For our full board climbers we set up intermediate facility at camp 2 (6750m); this will include personal tents for full board clients, kitchen and dining tents and the toilet facility. We provide a personal climbing Sherpa guide to help the clients to reach the summit. Personal climbing Sherpa will set up camp 1, 2 o three as necessary including food provisions, fuel and oxygen and will guide and assist the client on the summit day. We provide the climbing Sherpa with appropriate radio communication to the climbing route.
Southeast Face Route:
This is route of the first ascent and it is considered as the standard route. The route starts from Hinko Cave Base Camp (3400m; 28°29'50.03"N 83°53'52.60"E) on the Annapurna Sanctuary trail about 33km from the trailhead and 4km from the Machhapuchhre Base Camp located at the base of Hiunchuli Northeast shoulder. The base Camp is located very low so with 3000m climbing route it may be necessary to establish 2 high camps. Although technically not difficult scrambling on a mixed snow-ice-rock route with average slope of 45deg, the route is exposed to rock fall and somewhat complicated with route-finding on the lower rock scrambling section.
Northwest Face Route:
The ascent by the North-West Face was attempted only by a very few climbers and not always successfully. The approach is from the Annapurna South Base Camp in the Sanctuary and a further 2 camps may be necessary to complete this not so well known ascent. First 1200m has only inclination of 30deg. The following 1000m is at inclination of 60deg.
Climbing Normal Route:
We take 7 day trek to Annapurna South Base Camp (4130m; 28°31'46"N 83°52'29"E) at Annapurna Sanctuary via Ghorapeni; We hike to Poon Hill for acclimatization purposes and the world class view on Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri.
At Annapurna Sanctuary we scramble to 30deg section of Northwest route to 5300m at the base of the Northwest Face. This will be equivalent to walking to Camp 1 on Southeast Face.
We will move to Hinku Cave (3400m; 28°29'50.03"N 83°53'52.60"E), the Base Camp for Southeast route. We take one day to scramble to the High Camp (5900m) on the Southeast route, and make 500m push for the summit the following morning. We will return from the summit to the Base Camp and start our 4 days return trek to the trailhead in Nayapool

Testimonials
“Excellent trip with an excellent company- EBC & Island Peak 2011!”
I recently traveled on a trip to Everest Base Camp and Island Peak with Snowy Horizon Treks and Expeditions and was extremely impressed with their logistics and attention to detail. Even during some of the worst weather in years in Nepal, our trip was great, in no small part to the guides, porters and leaders at Snowy Horizon Treks. They are true professionals, not to mention genuinly honest and great people, who provide a service that is second to none. If you travel with them, you will not be disappointed.
