Pisang Peak Climbing (6,091m)- Spring 2012
Pisang Peak (6092m) is one of Nepal's easier trekking peaks. It is a great climbing objective for trekkers doing Annapurna Circuit either full version or half version to Manang. It can be an exciting extension to trekking and an accessible introduction to snow climbing experience converting the trek in to a safe but exciting adventure.
It is easy non-technical scramble at a reasonably high elevation allowing easy way to achieve the elevation goal of 6000m. The scramble is on an average slope of 40deg with short sections of 50deg on rock and snow.
The views are absolutely stunning on the entire Annapurna range including Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Machhapurchhe, and entire magnificent Grand Barrier from Tilicho Peak to Roc Noir.
The access along the Annapurna Circuit is world class long distance trek with stunning views along picturesque River from Besi Sahar to Manang and the opportunity to experience diverse Marsyangdi cultures of different Nepalese ethnic groups living in mutual respect and harmony, unusual in today busy, desperate and confused world. The trek starts at subtropical area and reaches high altitude meadows and if continued past Manang over the Thorong Pass to Muktinath village we will experience Tibetan type of cultures and architecture. So altogether this is probably the most diverse climbing trek in Nepal from cultural and nature aspects as well as the diversity of activities.
Our standard trek ends in Jomsom from where we fly out to Pokhara cutting short of the entire Annapurna Circuit and missing the Kali Gandaki Valley. We offer the option to continue along the Kali Gandaki Valley to Beni Bazar for those, who have extra 4 days and enough energy. For clients with limited time it is possible to fly out from Manang.
Our Pisang Peak Climbing Services
In the Base Camp: Snowy Horizon Treks & Expedition provides very professional, helpful and friendly service from Kathmandu to the ABC as well as during the climb. Our objective is to provide a good quality, helpful, safe, friendly, stress free and comprehensive service to maximize summit opportunity.
In the Base camp our cooks and helpers will prepare and serve three delicious freshly cooked and plentiful meals a day and will ensure that hot and cold drinks are available 24hrs a day. In the Base Camp we provide spacious expedition quality personal tents for all our clients both with full board or base-camp service only. In the base camp we also provide dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet facilities and portable shower facilities and tent accommodation for our staff.
In the Base Camp we provide access to communication including satellite telephone and internet access, solar panels to charge your batteries and UHF/VHF hand held radios on the mountain to maintain communications between ABC and high camps.
Our Leader and camp manager as well as climbing Sherpas have an extensive experience of multiple Everest climbs. They will ensure cooperation with other companies and Base Camp organization. The Base Camp is a cooperative to ensure contribution from all operators to the task of route fixing and to ensure the safety of climbers from ABC to the summit.
Full Board: For our full board climbers we set up intermediate facility at camp 2 (6750m); this will include personal tents for full board clients, kitchen and dining tents and the toilet facility. We provide a personal climbing Sherpa guide to help the clients to reach the summit. Personal climbing Sherpa will set up camp 1, 2 o three as necessary including food provisions, fuel and oxygen and will guide and assist the client on the summit day. We provide the climbing Sherpa with appropriate radio communication to the climbing route.
Approach to Base Camp
The approach trek starts in Besi Sahar (823m) after long but scenic 7hrs drive from Kathmandu. We trek to Bahundanda (1305m) and we catch glimpses of Manaslu just before descending to the village.
We continue through picturesque villages along the Marsyangdi River valley progressing from subtropical vegetation zone to alpine meadows near Upper Pisang. There are spectacular waterfalls along and we experience diverse village cultures.
The access trek to the Pisang Peak Base Camp starts at Upper Pisang (3300m). After 7 days trekking with a slow and progressive elevation gain and acclimatization day at Upper Pisang village we are ready for the climb. We start with a trek to the Base Camp, were we gain 1300m over 3.9km on the average climbing slope of 30deg.
Climbing Routes
We will attempt the summit with the intermediate camp at 5030m with one day available for acclimatization. The High Camp is 1.2km away from the Base Camp with 550m of elevation gain on an average climbing slope of 35-40deg on a mix rock-snow route. It is a well protected scramble on a broad Southwest shoulder.
The distance from the High Camp to the summit is 2.5km with the elevation gain of 1060m. From High Camp the climbing angle increases to 40-45deg for about 650m and we gain 300m in elevation before it levels to 30deg for some 350m. For next 900m we will climb the slope of 50deg and we will gain elevation of just over 500m before the slope angle flattens to 20deg for last 500m of the summit West Ridge.
From the summit we down climb to the Base Camp.
